AND now it came to pass that when Moroni had receivedthis epistle his heart did take courage, and was filled withexceedingly great joy because of the faithfulness ofPahoran, that he was not also a traitor to the freedom andcause of his country. 2 But he did also mourn exceedinglybecause of the iniquity of those who had driven Pahoranfrom the judgment-seat, yea, in fine because of those whohad rebelled against their country and also their God.MormonCamp of Moroni62 B.C.3 And it came to pass that Moroni took a small number ofmen, according to the desire of Pahoran, and gave Lehi andTeancum command over the remainder of his army, andtook his march towards the land of Gideon. 4 And he didraise the standard of liberty in whatsoever place he didenter, and gained whatsoever force he could in all his marchtowards the land of Gideon.Land of Gideon5 And it came to pass that thousands did flock unto hisstandard, and did take up their swords in the defence oftheir freedom, that they might not come into bondage. 6And thus, when Moroni had gathered together whatsoevermen he could in all his march, he came to the land ofGideon; and uniting his forces with those of Pahoran theybecame exceedingly strong, even stronger than the men ofPachus, who was the king of those dissenters who haddriven the freemen out of the land of Zarahemla and hadtaken possession of the land.7 And it came to pass that Moroni and Pahoran went downwith their armies into the land of Zarahemla, and went forthagainst the city, and did meet the men of Pachus, insomuchthat they did come to battle. 8 And behold, Pachus was slainand his men were taken prisoners, and Pahoran was restoredto his judgment-seat. 9 And the men of Pachus receivedtheir trial, according to the law, and also those king-menwho had been taken and cast into prison; and they wereexecuted according to the law; yea, those men of Pachusand those king-men, whosoever would not take up arms inthe defence of their country, but would fight against it, wereput to death. 10 And thus it became expedient that this lawshould be strictly observed for the safety of their country;City of Zarahemla yea, and whosoever was found denying their freedom wasspeedily executed according to the law. 11 And thus endedthe thirtieth year of the reign of the judges over the peopleof Nephi; Moroni and Pahoran having restored peace to theland of Zarahemla, among their own people, havinginflicted death upon all those who were not true to the causeof freedom.MormonCity of Zarahemla62 B.C.12 And it came to pass in the commencement of the thirtyand first year of the reign of the judges over the people ofNephi, Moroni immediately caused that provisions shouldbe sent, and also an army of six thousand men should besent unto Helaman, to assist him in preserving that part ofthe land. 13 And he also caused that an army of six thousandmen, with a sufficient quantity of food, should be sent to thearmies of Lehi and Teancum. And it came to pass that thiswas done to fortify the land against the Lamanites.61 B.C.14 And it came to pass that Moroni and Pahoran, leaving alarge body of men in the land of Zarahemla, took theirmarch with a large body of men towards the land ofNephihah, being determined to overthrow the Lamanites inthat city.Between land ofZarahemla andland of Nephihah15 And it came to pass that as they were marching towardsthe land, they took a large body of men of the Lamanites, and slew many of them, and took their provisions and theirweapons of war.16 And it came to pass after they had taken them, theycaused them to enter into a covenant that they would nomore take up their weapons of war against the Nephites. 17And when they had entered into this covenant they sentthem to dwell with the people of Ammon, and they were innumber about four thousand who had not been slain.18 And it came to pass that when they had sent them awaythey pursued their march towards the land of Nephihah. And it came to pass that when they had come to the city ofNephihah, they did pitch their tents in the plains ofNephihah, which is near the city of Nephihah. 19 NowMoroni was desirous that the Lamanites should come out tobattle against them, upon the plains; but the Lamanites, knowing of their exceedingly great courage, and beholdingthe greatness of their numbers, therefore they durst notcome out against them; therefore they did not come to battlePlains ofNephihah nearcity of Nephihah in that day. 20 And when the night came, Moroni went forthin the darkness of the night, and came upon the top of thewall to spy out in what part of the city the Lamanites didcamp with their army.MormonPlains ofNephihah nearcity of Nephihah61 B.C.21 And it came to pass that they were on the east, by theentrance; and they were all asleep. And now Moronireturned to his army, and caused that they should prepare inhaste strong cords and ladders, to be let down from the topof the wall into the inner part of the wall.East entrance ofcity of Nephihah22 And it came to pass that Moroni caused that his menshould march forth and come upon the top of the wall, andlet themselves down into that part of the city, yea, even onthe west, where the Lamanites did not camp with theirarmies.West wall of cityof Nephihah23 And it came to pass that they were all let down into thecity by night, by the means of their strong cords and theirladders; thus when the morning came they were all withinthe walls of the city. 24 And now, when the Lamanitesawoke and saw that the armies of Moroni were within thewalls, they were affrighted exceedingly, insomuch that theydid flee out by the pass. 25 And now when Moroni saw thatthey were fleeing before him, he did cause that his menshould march forth against them, and slew many, andsurrounded many others, and took them prisoners; and theremainder of them fled into the land of Moroni, which wasin the borders by the seashore. 26 Thus had Moroni andPahoran obtained the possession of the city of Nephihahwithout the loss of one soul; and there were many of theLamanites who were slain.City of Nephihah27 Now it came to pass that many of the Lamanites thatwere prisoners were desirous to join the people of Ammonand become a free people.28 And it came to pass that as many as were desirous, untothem it was granted according to their desires. 29 Therefore, all the prisoners of the Lamanites did join the people ofAmmon, and did begin to labor exceedingly, tilling theground, raising all manner of grain, and flocks and herds ofevery kind; and thus were the Nephites relieved from agreat burden; yea, insomuch that they were relieved fromall the prisoners of the Lamanites.Land of Jershon
