AND it came to pass that as many as would not hearken tothe words of Helaman and his brethren were gatheredtogether against their brethren. 2 And now behold, theywere exceedingly wroth, insomuch that they weredetermined to slay them. 3 Now the leader of those whowere wroth against their brethren was a large and a strongman; and his name was Amalickiah. 4 And Amalickiah wasdesirous to be a king; and those people who were wrothwere also desirous that he should be their king; and theywere the greater part of them the lower judges of the land, and they were seeking for power. 5 And they had been ledby the flatteries of Amalickiah, that if they would supporthim and establish him to be their king that he would makethem rulers over the people. 6 Thus they were led away byAmalickiah to dissensions, notwithstanding the preachingof Helaman and his brethren, yea, notwithstanding theirexceedingly great care over the church, for they were highpriests over the church. 7 And there were many in thechurch who believed in the flattering words of Amalickiah, therefore they dissented even from the church; and thuswere the affairs of the people of Nephi exceedinglyprecarious and dangerous, notwithstanding their greatvictory which they had had over the Lamanites, and theirgreat rejoicings which they had had because of theirdeliverance by the hand of the Lord.MormonNephite landsnear land ofZarahemla73 B.C.8 Thus we see how quick the children of men do forget theLord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity, and to be ledaway by the evil one. 9 Yea, and we also see the greatwickedness one very wicked man can cause to take placeamong the children of men. 10 Yea, we see that Amalickiah, because he was a man of cunning device and a man ofmany flattering words, that he led away the hearts of manypeople to do wickedly; yea, and to seek to destroy thechurch of God, and to destroy the foundation of libertywhich God had granted unto them, or which blessing Godhad sent upon the face of the land for the righteous’ sake.
